MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Sergei Lavrov said that because progress has been made in talks surrounding Iran’s controversial nuclear program and there is a possibility of having the international sanctions against the Islamic Republic lifted in the near future, Russia favors “making a decision that would show our readiness to promote Iran’s membership in the organization depending on the progress in settling the Iranian nuclear controversy.”
Iran has filed a request to join the regional cooperation group, but the bid has never been formally considered because the organization’s charter prohibits the accession of candidates who are under UN Security Council sanctions.
