A conference on Yemen reconciliation began in Riyadh involving over 400 representatives of the country’s political forces. Representatives of the Houthi rebel group, the main opposition force in Yemen, do not participate in the conference.

CAIRO (Sputnik) — A conference on Yemen reconciliation began in Riyadh on Sunday, involving over 400 representatives of the country’s political forces.

The conference was convened at the Saudi Arabia’s initiative.

The sides are expected to focus of the ways to solve the Yemeni crisis and return the government of President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi to power.

Representatives of the Houthi rebel group, the main opposition force in Yemen, do not participate in the conference.

Supporters of former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh who recently declared alliance with the Houthis are present at the conference.

In Yemen, the Houthi militia group is battling government forces, local tribes and al-Qaeda militants. Over the past few months, the Houthis have taken control over large parts of the country and forced President Hadi to flee the country.

A Saudi Arabia-led coalition began conducting airstrikes against the Houthi positions in Yemen at the end of March, upon Persident Hadi's request.

On Tuesday, the five-day truce in Yemen came into force to provide local residents with humanitarian assistance and evacuate the injured. However, all parties of the conflict have accused each other of violating the truce.
