The United States-led Coalition against the Islamic State launched 24 airstrikes against the terrorist group in Syria and Iraq, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced in a statement.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US-led Coalition comprises some 60 nations that began carrying out airstrikes against Islamic State targets in Iraq in August 2014, and expanded the air campaign to Syria in September 2014, albeit without the approval of the Syrian government.

In Syria, the Coalition struck the militants’ fighting positions, light vehicles, tanks and tactical units.

“In Syria, coalition military forces conducted 12 airstrikes using attack, bomber, fighter and remotely piloted aircraft,” the CENTCOM statement read on Friday.

“Separately in Iraq, coalition military forces conducted 12 airstrikes approved by the Iraqi Ministry of Defense using attack, bomber, fighter and remotely piloted aircraft against ISIL [Islamic State] terrorists”

While in Iraq, the Coalition airstrikes hit the Islamic State headquarters and other buildings, weapons as well as a mortar system.

“Daesh [Islamic State] targets were again struck near Al Hasakah, Syria,” Colonel Wayne Marotto said in the statement. “These strikes continue to take their toll against Daesh terrorists there.”

The airstrikes are a part of the Coalition’s Operation Inherent Resolve, whose goal is to eliminate the ISIL terrorist group, according to statement.
