NATO supports sanctions against Russia but will leave the door open for dialogue, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said Wednesday.

ANTALYA (Sputnik) – During a meeting with NATO heads of foreign ministries in Turkey, Jens Stoltenberg said:

“NATO's position remains unchanged — we've suspended all practical cooperation with Russia, support the economic sanctions but at the same time we keep the chance for political dialogue open.”

In April 2014, NATO ceased all civilian and military cooperation with Russia over the Ukrainian crisis.

The United States, the European Union and their allies introduced several rounds of economic sanctions targeting Russia's banking, energy and defense sectors, as well as certain individuals in 2014.

The restrictive measures also include asset freezes and travel bans for blacklisted individuals.

The EU-imposed sectoral sanctions are due to run out in July, and can be renewed only by a unanimous decision of the bloc's 28 member states.
