Ecuador President Rafael Correa has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to visit the Latin American country, and the visit may take place soon, new Ecuadoran ambassador to Russia Julio Cesar Prado Espinosa told Sputnik Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Ecuadoran ambassador noted that since he assumed office in 2007, Rafael Correa visited Russia twice — in 2009 and 2013. And, according to diplomatic traditions, it is now the turn of the Russian leader to repay the visit.

“President Correa has invited him [Russian President Vladimir Putin] personally. We expect that during some international reunion in which both leaders will participate, President Correa will reiterate his invitation. I think that the good relations [between the two states] and the bilateral meetings that will happen soon will set the stage for President Putin’s visit to Ecuador.”

In July 2014, Putin went on a six-day tour to Latin America visiting Brazil, Argentina, Nicaragua and Cuba.

“I understand that a leader like President Putin needs the invitation not only from Ecuador, but from other countries [of the region] as well, to make a major tour like the one he made last time," he said, adding he will remind Putin of Correa’s invitation when presenting his credentials as the new Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ecuador in the Russian Federation.
