NATO Baltic Air Policing jets scrambled to intercept a Russian Antonov An-22 heavy military transport plane flying over the Baltic Sea close to Latvian airspace, the Latvian Armed Forces said in tweet on Monday.

The Russian aircraft did not enter Latvia’s airspace though as it was actually on a routine training flight above the neutral Baltic Sea.

Meanwhile, there have been increasing Western reports about Russian military aircraft allegedly flying close to Western borders, including those of Great Britain.

In January, the Russian ambassador in London was summoned to the Foreign Office for explanation after Russian Tupolev Tu-95 strategic bombers approached the coast of Southern England, forcing the British authorities to order several commercial flights to divert midair.

Russia has repeatedly denied accusations of violating European countries' airspace and territorial waters.
