Spokeswoman for the Russian Interior Ministry Elena Alekseeva stated that about 20 million people across Russia took part in celebrations commemorating the 70th anniversary of victory over the Nazi Germany in World War II on Saturday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — About 20 million people across Russia took part in celebrations commemorating the 70th anniversary of victory over the Nazi Germany in World War II on Saturday, spokeswoman for the Russian Interior Ministry Elena Alekseeva said in a statement.

"About 20 million people in Russia participated in the celebrations, devoted to the glorious anniversary of the Great Victory," Alekseeva said, adding that some three million people took part in the Victory Day events in Moscow only.

A ceremony to welcome the participants in the Our Great Victory motor rally by the Central Museum of the Great Patriotic War on Moscow's Poklonnaya Gora.

There were about 14,000 commemorating events in more than 6,000 localities across Russia, the statement said.

This weekend, Moscow held its largest-ever military parade to honour the memory of those who fought in the war against fascism. About 30 heads of world's states and governments attended the celebrations in the Russian capital.
