Baltimore Police Want State's Attorney Recused From Freddie Gray Case

The Baltimore Police Department reportedly have requested that the State’s Attorney for the city of Baltimore Marilyn Mosby to recuse herself from prosecuting the Freddie Gray case.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The Baltimore Police Department have requested that the State’s Attorney for the city of Baltimore Marilyn Mosby to recuse herself from prosecuting the Freddie Gray case, according to media reports.

“A motion has been filed on behalf of the officers charged in Freddie Gray’s death,” WBAL TV NBC Channel 11 Baltimore reported on Friday. “In it, it’s asked that Baltimore City State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby recuse herself.”

On May 1, 2015, Mosby filed charges against six Baltimore police officers that were involved in the illegal arrest of African-American man Freddie Gray, who died of injuries he sustained in a police van.

The motion lists five reasons why Mosby should recuse herself, including seizing of personal gain by Mosby and her husband; personal relationships with individuals who will be witnesses at trial; her role as investigating the case; the pending civil claim against Mosby and her office; and the financial interest for the Gray family, who Baltimore police say is a close friend of Mosby.

“The pleadings speak for themselves and we look forward to litigating them in the courtroom,” Baltimore attorney Marc Zayon was quoted as saying by local media.

On May 8, 2015, the US Department of Justice agreed to launch an investigation into the Baltimore Police Department to determine whether its officers engaged in discriminatory practices following the filing of charges against the six officers.
