LONDON (Sputnik) The Conservatives have managed to secure enough seats in the country's parliament to form a majority government in the tightest race Britain has seen over the last decades.

As the vote count showed, the Conservatives won 323 seats in the parliament, which means they become the UK ruling party. The Labour is behind with 228 seats so far.

Usually, 326 seats are necessary for a majority government, but given that Sinn Fein parliamentarians have not taken up seats, the line in practice fell to 323.

The Scottish National Party, which has scored a triumph in this election, came third with 56 seats, taking an historical lead over the Liberal Democrats. The latter gained just eight seats.

Until very last, a coalition or a minority government seemed to be the most likely future for Britain for the next five years. However, in the end of a dramatic vote count nigh,t the Tories took over the Labour and built up their lead.
