The training is aimed at detecting and destroying submarines and suspicious "underwater objects". According to a statement on its website, NATO will practice anti-submarine warfare in the air, on the surface and underwater.

The exercise started shortly after a new wave of paranoia about “Russian submarines”, which began in late April, when Finland allegedly discovered an unidentified underwater object in its territorial waters.

In October 2014 a similar situation occurred in Sweden. In reference to the Finnish case, Swedish retired submarine forces commander Goran Frisk laid the blame on “Russians”.
