Huntsville, Alabama police officer Brett Russell has been indicted for assaulting and depriving detainee G.H. of rights under the law and obstructing justice by providing a false police report in 2011, the US Justice Department stated in a release.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Russell falsely stated in his report that G.H. kicked and attempted to headbutt officers while they transported him to Russell’s vehicle, and did not comply when told to stop, and was transported to the Huntsville metro jail “without incident,” according to indictment.

“The Justice Department announced that Huntsville, Alabama, Police Department Officer Brett Russell, 48, has been charged with deprivation of rights under color of law for allegedly assaulting and injuring G.H., a detainee, on Dec. 23, 2011,” the release said on Thursday.

“Russell also has been charged with obstruction of justice for allegedly filing a false police report regarding this incident,” the release added.

If convicted, Russell faces a maximum sentence of ten years in prison for the civil rights charge and 20 years for the obstruction charge.

The investigation on the incident has been conducted by the Florence Resident Agency of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which is still ongoing.
