The Council of Europe's Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) recommended to bring Ukraine's State Security Service to justice for the ill-treatment of prisoners, according to the latest CRT report, cited by Russia's RIA-Novosti news agency.

The report came after a CRT delegation's visit to eastern Ukraine, where they received a number of complaints related to the Ukrainian Security Service's ill-treatment of those captured in the so-called anti-terrorist operation zone in the Donbass region.

"The CPT recommends that the Ukrainian authorities deliver a clear message to SBU officers and military staff that all forms of ill-treatment of persons deprived of their liberty are not acceptable and will be punished accordingly," the report said.

The complaints include the use of packages for blindfolding detainees during transportation, the incarceration of detainees in military units without any communication within several days of their transportation to the State Security Service, and the poor record of the results of detainees' medical examinations.

In January 2015, the CPT published a similar report that singled out a spate of cases where force was used excessively by the State Security Service within the framework of the anti-terrorist operation in eastern Ukraine.
