The two planes arrived just under an hour earlier, carrying about 100 Russian rescuers and medical staff who will assist in earthquake relief, as well as technical equipment and about two tonnes of humanitarian aid.

On Saturday, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake shook Nepal, causing major damage in the country and temporarily closing down Kathmandu's Tribhuvan International Airport.

The earthquake and its numerous aftershocks claimed the lives of over 5,000 people, according to the latest official data.

Countries across the world have offered Nepal both financial and practical assistance to cope with the disaster, while UN’s World Food Programme has vowed to provide 1.4 million earthquake survivors with food.
