A magnitude 5.5 earthquake hit the south Mexican state of Oaxaca on Tuesday, the National Seismological Service said.

MEXICO CITY (Sputnik) — The quake struck 23 kilometers (14 miles) northwest of Matias Romero, a town in Oaxaca. Tremors were felt as far as the nation’s capital Mexico City, Mexico State and across several other states. People fled their homes in panic to stay out in the open.

Reports initially spoke of a magnitude 6.1 earthquake, but this was later adjusted to magnitude 5.5.

There was no word of casualties or damage.
