MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The launches were held last week and included control fire of the S-300 missile system as well as its modifications.

The Russian military unit was deployed from its base in Armenia for training.

Russia is currently looking to finalize the delivery of five S-300 missile defense systems to Iran as part of the $800-million deal signed between the countries in 2007.

Earlier this month, Russian President Vladimir Putin lifted an embargo on arms supplies to Iran following a breakthrough in talks to ensure the peaceful nature of Tehran's nuclear energy program.

The S-300 long-range surface-to-air missiles first entered service in 1978 and have since been at the core of the Soviet Union's and then Russia's anti-air and missile defense.

The system is also used by other former Soviet republics as well as some other European and Asian countries.
