UN Names New Special Envoy for Conflict-Torn Yemen

Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed of Mauritania will replace Jamal Benomar, who resigned amid the armed conflict in the country, as the UN Special Adviser for Yemen, the organization announced Saturday.

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) — Ould Cheikh Ahmed will cooperate closely United Nations Security Council, the Gulf Cooperation Council, Governments in the region and other partners, as well as the United Nations Country Team for Yemen.

"UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced today the appointment of Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed of Mauritania as his Special Envoy for Yemen," the UN statement said.

Ould Cheikh Ahmed is the Secretary-General's Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Mission for Ebola Emergency Response (UNMEER).

Jamal Benomar of the United Kingdom has resigned earlier this month amid the armed conflict in Yemen.
