Ukraine's Minister of Energy and Coal Industry Volodymyr Demchyshyn said that the Donbass region that lies in the center of Ukraine’s conflict receives approximately five million cubic meters of gas daily.

HOUSTON (Sputnik) — The Donbass region that lies in the center of Ukraine’s conflict receives approximately five million cubic meters of gas daily, Ukraine's Minister of Energy and Coal Industry Volodymyr Demchyshyn said on Wednesday.

“Naftogas delivers less than ten million cubic meters of gas daily to the Donbass region,” Demchyshyn said at an energy seminar in Houston, Texas. “It's some 4-5 [million cubic meters]."

Demchyshyn noted that the gas consumption generally decreased in the whole of Ukraine and stands at 40 billion cubic meters per year, 20 billion cubic meters of which the country purchases abroad.

Kiev and Donbass have been in the state of conflict since April 2014, when the Kiev authorities launched a military operation in the country's southeast to fight the region’s independence supporters.

In mid-February 2015, the warring sides agreed to a ceasefire deal, worked out by the leaders of Russia, Ukraine, France and Germany in Minsk, Belarus. The parties agreed to stop hostilities and withdraw heavy weapons from the line of contact, but since, both parties have reported truce violations.
