WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Washington, DC police have closed several streets in proximity to the White House and evacuated offices near the US Congress due to an investigation into suspicious items, according to local media reports.
Police closed several blocks east of the White House to vehicles on Wednesday afternoon after the report of a suspicious object, the Washington Post said. Local police authorities would not provide further information about the suspicious item.
Meanwhile, suspicious powdery substance was also found on Wednesday afternoon at the Cannon House Office Building across the street from the US Congress, local media reported. Several US congressmen offices are located in the building.
A hazardous materials team is currently evaluating the substance.
