Turkey Has Highest Documented Rate of Transgender Murders in Europe
STRASBOURG (Sputnik), Daria Chernyshova Anne Brasseur, president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), said Wednesday it was necessary to prevent discrimination against transgender people.

"We must stand up and must say no to any discrimination," Brasseur said, adding that it was important to address the issue.

German Ambassador to the Council of Europe Julius Georg Luy spoke of the necessity to improve the cultural image of transgender people and their status in professional life.

According to the German diplomat, 30-40 percent of transgender people are denied jobs, because their gender identity deviates from society norms.

Later on Wednesday, PACE will hold a debate to discuss a report on transgender people in Europe.

On April 21, the assembly held a preliminary debate on the issue. Turkey reported 37 killings of transgender people between 2008 and 2014, higher than any other European country.
