Armed forces and tribesman are fighting against the Houthis for the control of the third largest city in Yemen, Taiz, according to local reports. Houthi militias, assisted by the forces loyal to the country's former president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, took over the city with a population over 600,000 people in late March.

Yemen has been in a state of turmoil since the Houthis seized large parts of Yemen, including the capital of Sanaa, forcing President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi to ask the Arab League for military aid and then flee the country.

On March 25, Saudi Arabia and Persian Gulf countries began air raids against Houthi positions in the Yemen at the request of the country's ousted President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi. The campaign, dubbed Operation Decisive Storm, is designed to roll back the Houthi military insurgency.

According to UN data, over 700 people have been killed and 2,700 wounded, most of them civilians, in the fighting.
