Two bomb attacks targeting security forces in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula killed at least 13 people and wounded dozens on Sunday.

A suspected car bomb exploded at the entrance of one of North Sinai Province’s main police stations; at approximately the same time, a military checkpoint came under attack from militants.

Egypt's army said a roadside bomb detonated by militants killed six soldiers and wounded two others in an attack on a bulletproof military vehicle in the town of Sheikh Zuweid. In an official statement, the army announced that "terrorist and extremist elements" were behind the blast and that two of those killed were officers.

A Twitter feed purporting to be the official account for North Sinai Province posted that a militant group that has vowed allegiance to Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack.
