UNICEF, Red Cross Send Two Planes With Humanitarian Aid to Yemen

UNICEF and the International Committee of the Red Cross brought two planes with humanitarian aid to Yemen's suffering population on Friday.

SANAA (Sputnik) – UNICEF and the International Committee of the Red Cross sent two aircraft with humanitarian aid to Yemen Friday, a staff member of the airport in Sanaa, the capital of Yemen, told Sputnik.

"Two planes have arrived, one from UNICEF and the other from the Red Cross. There is 30 tonnes [33 tons] of humanitarian and medical aid."

According to the source, the Saudi-led coalition, currently carrying out military attacks against Houthi militants in Yemen gave the organizations two hours to unload the planes and leave Sanaa.

On Saturday, ICRC called for a humanitarian ceasefire in Yemen to allow for the delivery of aid to the country's suffering population.

Yemen is currently experiencing a civil war as Houthi militants continue to overrun areas controlled by troops loyal to President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, who fled the country amid the insurgency.

The Saudi-led coalition started carrying out airstrikes against Houthi positions in Yemen on March 25 in response to a request by Hadi.

At least 1,700 people have been injured and more than 540 killed in hostilities in Yemen since March 19, the World Health Organization said Tuesday.
