MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Russia and Greece paid a high price in the battle against fascism during World War II, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said on Thursday.

“During the Second World War, our peoples fought together against fascism, which was spreading across Europe,” Tsipras said, addressing the students of Moscow State Institute of International Relations.

"Greece and Russia paid with their blood" for the victory and "must not repeat the mistakes of our ancestors."

On May 9, extensive celebrations are planned in Moscow to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Nazi Germany surrender and the end of World War II.

Earlier in the day, it was announced that Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos will attend the Moscow celebrations. Tsipras has also been invited.

As of April 4, representatives from at least 25 states have accepted invitations to attend the Victory Day events, according to top Kremlin official Sergei Ivanov.

Over 15,000 servicemen from more than 10 countries will march on Moscow's Red Square on May 9, according to Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.
