The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) has conducted its first airstrike on the positions of the Islamic State militant group in Syria, Canadian Defense Minister Jason Kenney said Wednesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Last week, Canadian Parliament voted to approve the government's plan to carry out airstrikes in Syria and extend Canada's participation in the US-led coalition until March 2016.

"Canada is helping to ensure that ISIL has no safe haven," Kenney said.

Canada began launching airstrikes on the ISIL positions in Iraq in November 2014.

The Islamic State has been fighting the Syrian government since 2012. In June 2014, the militant group extended its attacks to northern and western Iraq, declaring a caliphate on the territories under its control in both countries.

A US-led coalition has been launching airstrikes against the militants' positions in Iraq since August 2014, expanding the attacks to include targets in Syria in September 2014.
