Kenya to Investigate Frozen Terror-Related Accounts After Garissa Attack

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The Kenyan government will conduct investigations into the activity of accounts frozen for alleged connections with terror activity, National Treasury Principal Secretary Kamau Thuge said on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, the government listed a group of 85 entities suspected to be associated with al-Shabaab militants, who claimed responsibility for last week's terror attack at a university in Kenyan Garissa.

The Kenyan government is currently tracking the financial histories of people allegedly linked to the Somalia-based al-Shabaab extremist group, but action against the account holders will be taken later, as the investigation is launched, Kamau Thuge was quoted as saying by the Kenyan newspaper Daily Nation.

Last Thursday, al-Shabaab militants, who have pleaded allegiance to al-Qaeda, broke into Garissa University College, killing 148 people, mainly students, and injuring over 100 others. Following the massacre, the militants warned about more forthcoming assaults in the country.

The militant group who claimed responsibility attack in Garissa, explained that the attack was revenge for Kenya’s former military presence in Somalia. Kenyan troops were deployed in Somalia in October 2011 to fight insurgents after a stint of kidnappings by the group.
