The unmanned vehicle created by scientists and engineers from the Georgia Institute of Technology dove to depths never before visited or seen.
Scientists deployed the vehicle through a 12-inch in diameter hole through 20 meters of ice and 500 meters of water to the Antarctic sea floor.
The vehicle carried a scientific payload capable of measuring ocean conditions under the ice.
Scientists expect that data retrieved by Icefin will help to understand how Antarctica’s ice shelves are changing, and to understand how organisms live in such an environment.
Icefin is capable of diving up to 1,500 meters and can perform three-kilometer-long journeys.
