At Least 21 Injured in Los Angeles Train Accident - Reports

Over 20 people reportedly were wounded when an Expo Line train hit a car in Los Angeles.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Over 20 people were wounded when an Expo Line train hit a car in Los Angeles, not far from the University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles Times reports.

Firefighters and paramedics were sent to the scene at about 10:50 a. m. local time on Saturday (17:00 GMT), the newspaper said, citing a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman.

According to Los Angeles Times, the driver of the Hyundai sedan hit by the train was in grave condition and had to be cut out of the vehicle. The train operator was also seriously injured and was taken to a local hospital, while the remaining 19 wounded sustained only minor injuries.

Train service was suspended following the accident and buses were provided for people as an alternative means of transportation.

The Expo Line is a local light-rail line, owned by Metro Rail (MTA), which consists of six lines, two of which are rapid transit subway lines. Expo Line runs between downtown Los Angeles and Culver City.

According to Los Angeles Times, Expo Line is considered the deadliest in Southern California, as nearly 120 people have died along the line between 1990 and 2013.

Meanwhile MTA's Blue Line, which runs between downtown Los Angeles and Long Beach, is reportedly the deadliest and most accident-prone light-rail line in the United States. More than 821 incidents and over 90 deaths were recorded on the line between 1990 and 2008.
