Obama, Erdogan to Continue Cooperating on Fighting ISIL - State Dep't

US President Barack Obama and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan discussed in a telephone conversation on Thursday the situation in Yemen, the negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program and the Turkey-US cooperation in the fight against the Islamic State, the White House stated.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Additionally, Obama expressed appreciation for Turkey’s continuing support to nearly two million refugees from Iraq and Syria.

Obama and Erdogan reviewed the train-and-equip program for vetted members of the moderate Syrian opposition and discussed ways to stem the flow of foreign fighters who want to join the ISIL, according to the statement.

“The President [Obama] spoke with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan today to discuss ongoing cooperation in the fight against ISIL [Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant] and common efforts to bring security and stability to Iraq and Syria,“ the statement, issued on Thursday, said.

“The leaders also discussed the latest developments in Yemen and Ukraine and in negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program, and pledged to continue to work closely on these and other regional issues,” it added.
