MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Baghdad spoke out against military intervention in the Yemen crisis on Thursday, adding that the Arab coalition's military operation will just make the situation worse.
“Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses concern over the military intervention in the affairs of the Yemen Arab Republic. Interference leads toward an even more complicated situation in the country, not letting it make political decisions in the current difficult circumstances,” the statement of the Iraqi Foreign Ministry read.
The ministry called for all the parties of the Yemen conflict to reconcile through negotiations, stressing that Baghdad’s position is to avoid the use of force.
On Wednesday, a coalition of Arab states comprising Bahrain, Qatar and Egypt and headed by Saudi Arabia launched airstrikes against Houthi rebel positions in Yemen.
The coalition has carried out attacks on Yemen’s capital Sanaa’s airport and a number of military positions.
Houthis currently control large parts of Yemen, including Sanaa.
