MexicoLeaks is intended to provide anonymity for sources revealing information on abuse of political power, including corruption and human rights violations. The website, launched March 10, has led to the dismissal of Mexico’s preeminent opposition journalist Carmen Aristegui, famous for her investigations of Mexican government practices.
“The project is necessary for Mexico because there are no safety guarantees for the journalists and information sources in the country. People are afraid to report information to the media, hand over documents. New technology allows to protect information sources,” Campa said.
An investigation team led by Aristegui recently exposed Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto’s wife held $4 million in real estate. Following the article's publication, Mexico’s first lady promised to sell the property.
