Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko called on Western countries to boycott the FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia, saying that Moscow had no right to host the major sporting event, taking into account the recent developments in Ukraine.

"They say that football has nothing to do with politics and one should separate the two. But how is this possible?" the Bild newspaper quoted Poroshenko as saying.

The Ukrainian president also said that the Minsk agreements, designed to resolve the crisis in the country, are highly fragile and inefficient.

"The truth is that the agreement does not work," Poroshenko told the German newspaper.

Minsk was "for us hope, not reality," he said. "They say they withdraw their weapons, but they give the OSCE no access to control it," he added.

Poroshenko also suggested that Western countries should impose more sanctions against Russia.

"There must be a reaction on the breach of the ceasefire. There can be further sanctions — in any case, the current sanctions should be extended until the end of the year," the Ukrainian president said.

In April 2014, Ukrainian authorities started a military operation in southeastern regions of Ukraine. According to the latest UN data, the conflict claimed lives of about 6,000 people.
