MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Prominent Russian ice hockey player Pavel Bure was nominated as the International Hockey League of Legends president, the Park of Legends ice hockey center in Moscow said in a press statement Friday.

The question of the International Hockey League of Legends establishment under the aegis of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) will be raised on May 15 in Prague in the framework of the World Championship-2015.

On Thursday, Pavel Bure discussed the issue of the new league with the IIHF President Rene Fasel and the league’s Secretary General Horst Lichtner, who arrived in Moscow to access the country’s readiness to host the IIHF Word Championship in 2016.

The new league would be an international championship for players over the age of 45 under veteran ice hockey rules. Six countries have already agreed to participate in the event, including Russia, Finland, Czech Republic, Sweden, Slovakia and Germany. The final is expected to take place in Moscow at the end of 2015.

Forty-three year old Pavel Bure finished his professional career in 2003. He played three seasons with the Russian Central Red Army team before joining the National Hockey League, where he played for 12 seasons with the Vancouver Canucks, Florida Panthers and the New York Rangers.

Bure won the World Championship-1990 with the Russian national ice hockey team, and a bronze medal in 1991. In 2012, he was inducted in the International Ice Hockey Federation Hall of Fame.
