Liberian Hospital Discharges Last Ebola Patient

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The last Ebola patient in West Africa's Liberia was discharged from local hospital on Thursday, the country's Ministry of Information said in a statement.

“We [Liberia] for the first time as a country since the second wave [of the Ebola outbreak] will be discharging the last confirmed Ebola case, and there will be a discharge — ceremony on the known last Ebola case,” Liberia’s Assistant Health Minister, Tolbert Nyansuah was quoted as saying in the press release.

The announcement was made Wednesday at a news briefing in Liberia’s capital Monrovia.

The last known Ebola patient in Liberia, 58-year-old Beatrice Yardolo, underwent treatment in a Chinese-run Ebola treatment unit.

Ebola is a deadly disease that spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person, or though contact with contaminated clothing or possessions.

Liberia, along with two other West African countries Guinea and Sierra Leone has been worst-hit by the current Ebola outbreak, which started in late 2013. The outbreak in Liberia alone claimed 4,117 lives, according to the latest WHO data.
