A four-alarm fire at the Port of Metro Vancouver Wednesday saw Hazmat teams responding and the evacuation of hundreds of people from the facility.

A shipping container full of Trichloroisocyanuric acid, an industrial bleaching agent and disinfectant, caught fire, prompting the closure of the port.

Employees were sent home and local residents were advised to stay inside while fire teams continued to tackle the blaze. The shelter in place order was later lifted.

“If they can remain in place at the moment, doors and windows closed, that’s the best advice,” said Dr. Patricia Daly from Vancouver Coastal Health, CBC News reported.
