DUSHANBE (Sputnik) – Tajikistan’s ruling People’s Democratic Party has won the parliamentary elections with 65.2 percent, the country’s top election official announced Monday.

“The elections were free, democratic and in accordance with Tajikistan’s laws. A total of 3,791,827 people took part, or 87.7 of registered voters,” Tajik Central Election Commission Chief Shermukhammad Shokhen said.

Three more parties have cleared the five-percent election threshold – the Socialist Party (5.5 percent), the Agrarian Party (11.8 percent) and the Party of Economic Reforms (7.6 percent), the official said.

The March 1 elections for Tajikistan's lower house of parliament were held in accordance with a decree signed by President Emomali Rahmon on December 5, 2014. The 63 members of the lower house are elected for a five-year term.

An Election Observation Mission (EOM) of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) was deployed to the Tajikistan elections, following an invitation by Tajik authorities. The mission consists of 14 international experts.
