Early Friday morning, nine people were found dead in six different crime scenes in and around the small Missouri town of Tyrone, according to local law enforcement.

Missouri State Highway Patrol said police were first called at 10:15 on Thursday night by a young girl who reported gunshots being fired. She then ran to a neighbor's home for safety. Responding to the call, law enforcement found two bodies in the girl's home.

Five additional fatalities were found in three other Tyrone residences, as well as one injured victim who was also shot.

An elderly woman was found dead in yet another residence, but appears to have died of natural causes.

One of those found dead includes the alleged shooter, an unidentified 36-year-old man whose body was discovered in a parked vehicle in neighboring Shannon County. Law enforcement says his cause of death was a self-inflicted gunshot.

During a news conference Friday morning, authorities confirmed that they found nine bodies. This total includes seven gunshot victims, the alleged shooter, and the elderly woman.

Multiple neighbors living near two of the crime scenes told the Houston Herald they were visited by police at 3:45 am, told to remain inside their home, and not open the door to strangers.

The shootings occurred in a largely rural area near Mark Twain National Forest.

The Herald reports that area school officials were told to arrive at work early for counseling sessions.

The names of the victims have not yet been released. Police are waiting to inform family members before making those names public.

State police have stressed that the investigation is still in its preliminary stages, and more information may be revealed later in the day.
