US Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee says that the US Congress should respect the newly enacted law permitting the legal use of marijuana in Washington, DC.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The US Congress should respect the newly enacted law permitting the legal use of marijuana in Washington, DC, US Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee told Sputnik on Thursday.

“The residents of the District of Columbia have passed a law. That law should be abided by the citizens of the District of Columbia and by this US Congress, period,” Jackson Lee said of the enactment of the Washington, DC law legalizing marijuana.

The law should be adhered to by the citizens of Washington, DC “and there should be no interference,” Jackson Lee told Sputnik, referring to recent statements by members of Congress asserting that they would prevent the law’s enactment.

The US Congress passed a bill in December that would ban funding for the local law. Congress has a unique relationship with Washington, DC and is responsible for issues of taxation and budget approval.

Washington, DC residents approved a ballot measure in the 2014 election to legalize the use recreational pot. As of midnight on Thursday, the law was officially enacted.
