Defense spending cuts reportedly have sparked concerns among US troops about their career.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — Defense spending cuts have sparked concerns among US troops about their career options, the Military Times reported Wednesday.

The United States is planning to decrease defense spending by 10 percent by 2021.

"Thirty years ago, if you were a good airman and worked hard, you could serve for 20 years. I'm not sure you can say the same today," US Air Force Chief Master Sgt. James Cody was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

He added that the uncertainty concerning the defense budget curtailed service personnel's ability to serve.

Servicemen are said to be expressing fear about the consequences the budget cuts might have for their readiness, payment and career.

According to the Pentagon, defense spending in the country will be cut by 10 percent between 2013 and 2021 under the defense-related provisions of sequestration, which will result in $487 billion in cost savings.

The Pentagon opposes sequestration, arguing that budget cuts pose a challenge to US military readiness and modernization.

The US military budget has declined from its peak of nearly $700 billion in 2010, according to the Department of Defense data.
