Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan admitted to have underestimated the ability of Boko Haram militants in the beginning of the conflict.

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan said that in the beginning of the conflict he underestimated the capacity of the Boko Haram militants who have occupied much of the country's northeast.

The president said that the military has recently attained more arms and ammunition to fight with the Islamists, promising that their suppression and capture of the group’s leader Abubakar Shekau was near.

Nigerian military authorities on Saturday claimed to have recaptured the fishing town of Baga from the militants, more than a month after it was overrun in one of the worst massacres of the six-year insurgency.

Over one million people have been left homeless since 2009 as the rebels take over towns and villages in order to form an Islamic state in northeastern Nigeria.
