Gunmen have killed the spokesman of a Sunni religious group in Pakistan after a failed attack on its leader on Saturday, as Pakistan experiences a surge of sectarian violence.

The spokesman of a hardline Sunni group in Pakistan was killed by attackers riding a motorcycle on Sunday, in what appears to be a coordinated attack on the group's leadership, Pakistan Today reported.

Maulana Mazhar Siddiqui, the spokesman of the religious group Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ), was killed in the attack, which took place in a suburb of Islamabad. Siddiqui was traveling in a car when he was gunned down, and two of his bodyguards were injured.

The attack follows an assassination attempt on the group's president, Maulana Aurangzeb Farooqui, which took place Saturday night in Karachi.
