Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan took the opportunity, during a state visit to Mexico on Thursday, to call out US President Barack Obama for his perceived silence after the murders of three young Muslims in North Carolina earlier this week.

"If you stay silent when faced with an incident like this, and don't make a statement, the world will stay silent towards you," Erdogan said, while Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto stood alongside him.

Thousands Attend Funeral of Chapel Hill Shooting Victims

The three young Muslims — Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23, his wife Yusor Mohammad, 21, and her sister Razan, 19 — were shot dead in Chapel Hill Tuesday evening by Craig Stephen Hicks.

Erdogan condemned the man responsible for the shooting but said that leaders like Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of State John Kerry have a responsibility to take a position against such acts of violence.

As the United States leads a coalition to fight the Islamic State just on the other side of the Turkish border, disagreements have arisen over how best to conduct operations against the insurgents. Turkey, for example, has denied the US use of its air base at Incirlik.
