US tech giant Apple plans to invest $850 million to build a 1,300-acre solar farm in Monterey, California in a bid to make its power use derived from more environmentally friendly sources, company CEO Tim Cook announced.

"We know at Apple that climate change is real," said Cook as quoted by The Verge. "The time for talk has passed and the time for action is now."

Apple is partnering with First Solar on the project.

The farm is planned to add 130 megawatts of new solar energy to California, enough to power 50,000 average homes. It will also cover all the company’s energy needs in the state, including the Apple Campus 2 and other corporate offices.
