WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — The European Union is open to listen to Greek new government’s proposals on reframing the bailout terms and further negotiations will depend on what Greece has to offer, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said during a joint press conference with US President Barack Obama on Monday.

“What counts is what Greece will put on the table… I will wait for Greece to come with a sustainable proposal, and then we will talk about this,” Merkel said.

Greek Finance Minister to Discuss Austerity With German Counterpart
On Wednesday, the Euro zone finance ministers will convene in Brussels, where Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis will announce country’s proposals on reforms of the current austerity measures while remaining in the Euro zone.

“The German policy ever since 2010 has been aimed at Greece staying a member of the Euro zone,” Merkel stressed, adding that basis for further discussion will be the programs agreed by the Troika of international creditors.

Last week European Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs Pierre Moscovici said that the European Commission is ready to make “certain amendments” to the relationship between Greece and the Troika.

Newly-elected Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and his left-wing party Syriza won the general election in Greece in January largely due to promises to renegotiate Greece’s bailout conditions with international lenders and stop unpopular austerity measures. Following its victory in the election, the party quickly allied themselves with the right-wing Independent Greeks party, which gave the coalition a majority in the Greek parliament.
