Ukraine's Poroshenko Not to Meet with Russia's Lavrov at Munich Conference
MUNICH, (Sputnik) — Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko reiterated on Saturday his calls for military assistance to the country saying that the lack of defense capabilities leads to even more violence.

Poroshenko is continuing to place the blame on Russia for what is happening in his own country  — the president even waved a number of passports in front of the press, allegedly claiming that they were detained from Russians fighting in the east of Ukraine.

"We should defend our territory with the support from the whole world," Poroshenko said addressing the Munich Security Conference.

"I know many experts have argued that enhancing us militarily will trigger further aggression. On the contrary, we have seen that the lack of defense capabilities threatens our operation in the east of Ukraine," he added.

Western nations have been at odds over the issue of lethal aid delivery to Ukraine, with the split getting even more apparent over the past days.

Speaking in Munich, German Chancellor Angela Merkel ruled out any possibility of lethal assistance to the conflict-torn country stressing that the delivery of arms would not help to solve the crisis.

Poroshenko responded by saying that Ukraine is a sovereign country and has every right to defend its borders, territory and people.

"We are not going by these weapons to kill anybody. It will just make the defense of my county more efficient," Poroshenko said.

Meanwhile in the same address the Ukrainian leader stressed that he was the president of peace, not the president of war.
