US Bureau of Labor Stats Reports Rise in Unemployment Despite Job Gains

A US Bureau of Labor Statistics study showed that the unemployment rate rose 0.2 percent from December.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – The US economy created 257,000 jobs in January, but the unemployment rate also increased, a US Bureau of Labor Statistics study released on Friday said.

“Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 257,000 in January, and the unemployment rate was little changed at 5.7 percent,” the study said.

The unemployment rate rose 0.2 percent from December, according to the study. Job increases were in the construction sector with over 39,000 new jobs, retail trade rose by 46,000 jobs, health care by 38,000 jobs, the financial activities by 26,000 jobs, manufacturing by 22,000 jobs, professional and technical activities by 33,000 jobs, and food services and drinking places by over 35,000, the study said.

Long-term unemployed workers remain unchanged at 2.8 million while the labor force participation rate rose by 0.2 percent, the study said.

The number of part-time workers remains unchanged at around 6.8 million people, while the number of those marginally attached to the workforce was down by 358,000 a year ago, according to the study.

The numbers of unemployed discouraged from seeking employment is 628,000, down from 155,000 a year ago, the study said.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics revised the change in payroll employment to reflect an increase in December from 252,000 to 329,000.
