New images from the Hubble space telescope show three of Jupiter’s largest moons, Europa, Io, and Callisto in transit across the Solar System’s largest planet, an occurrence that happens possibly two or three times in a decade.

Jupiter’s moons are often seen one at a time, casting a shadow across Jupiter’s thick gaseous exterior, but on January 23, the Hubble telescope was able to get footage of the view of three, Europa, Callisto, and Io in the same frame.

Jupiter has the most moons of any planet in our solar system at 50 (with 17 other observed satellites still awaiting confirmation).

NASA is currently seeking $30 million to plan a mission to Europa, which scientists believe may have a “habitable zone” and could harbor some form of life.

Europa could have twice as much water as the Earth, and scientists believe that if Earth can sustain life in its harshest environments, Europa may be able to as well.
