MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The United States has always wanted to destroy Ukraine's military-industrial complex, because it is closely linked to that of Russia, former Ukrainian prime minister Mykola Azarov told the Rossiya-1 TV channel on Thursday.

According to Azarov, one of the key US objectives is to "stop the military-industrial complex of Ukraine, because it used to compliment the military-industrial complex of Russia".

In June, 2014, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko ordered to halt all military and industrial cooperation with Russia, claiming that it was involved in the conflict in Ukraine's southeast, where Kiev launched a military operation against independence supporters in mid-April.

Meanwhile the United States, the European Union and their allies have imposed several rounds of sanctions against Russia, accusing it of supporting local militia in Ukraine's southeast.

Russia has repeatedly denied any involvement in the situation in Ukraine.

In order to replace Western components used in the country's defense industry, affected by the sanctions, Russia started to work on an import substitution program. The military equipment and arms import substitution plan was finalized in December. It is expected to eliminate Russia's dependency on foreign-made products in the defense sector.

The current authorities in Kiev lack political independence, so they will not be able to stop the ongoing fighting in southeastern Ukraine (Donbas), Ukrainian former prime minister stated.

"Can the current Kiev authorities stop the war? No they cannot. They are not autonomous," former Ukrainian prime minister Mykola Azarov told the Rossiya-1 TV channel on Thursday.

Ukraine has joined the West in its accusations against Russia of helping Donbas independence supporters.

Russia has repeatedly denied any involvement in the situation in Ukraine and has greatly contributed to international peace efforts aimed at halting ongoing violence that has killed over 5,300 people in Donbas since mid-April, 2014, according to UN data.

Russian representatives were present at the September Contact Group meeting in Minsk, where Kiev and independence supporters signed a ceasefire agreement.

However, despite the truce, fighting continues in southeastern Ukraine and has intensified at the beginning of this year.
