New York State Organizations Get $190Mln to Rehouse Homeless

According to the Senator Charles Schumer’s press office, US Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced $191,794,858 in federal funding has been awarded to 680 different organizations in New York State working to end homelessness.

WASHINGTON, January 28 (Sputnik) — New York State organizations, working to end homelessness, will get more than $190 million from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development to rehouse homeless people, Senator Charles Schumer’s press office announced in a statement Wednesday.

“Today, US Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced $191,794,858 in federal funding has been awarded to 680 different organizations in New York State working to end homelessness. The funding was allocated through the US Department of Housing and Urban Development’s [HUD] Continuum of Care [CoC] Program,” the press release read.

The CoC Program was developed to quickly rehouse homeless people in the United States and to help promote self-sufficiency among individuals and families who found themselves on the street.

“This is a sound investment in those in our community who are most in need and in New York State’s future,” Senator Schumer said in the statement.

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand highlighted that access to housing is vital for the health of families and economic strength of local communities, press release read.

Almost 580,000 people in the United States lack housing, 15 percent of them are considered «chronically homeless», according to the National Alliance to End Homelessness data.
