Emirates Airlines suspended flights to Baghdad, after unknown gunmen attacked the plane, injuring two people on board.

MOSCOW, January 27 (Sputnik) - Emirates Airlines suspended flights to Baghdad on Tuesday after a Fly Dubai passenger jet came under fire at the Baghdad International Airport on Monday night, with at least 2 passengers injured on board, Kurdish news channel KNN reported on Tuesday.

"We suspended it right now," Sheikh Majid Al Mualla, Divisional Senior Vice President of Commercial Operations at Emirates, said in a statement cited by Al Arabiya. Emirates noted that the flights to other Iraqi cities were not suspended.

Air Arabia and Etihad Airways have also canceled flights to the Iraqi capital.

Unidentified attackers fired at the plane eight times, keeping the planes set to travel into Baghdad later that day on the ground.

The wounded passengers were taken to hospital, where they are currently receiving necessary medical treatment.  Both of them are reported to be in stable condition.

UAE is a member of the US-led coalition conducting airstrikes against the Islamic State militants since August 2014. The Iraqi government forces and Kurdish militia are fighting against IS on the ground. Until recently, the fighting has been taking place in close proximity to the Baghdad airport.
