ATHENS, January 26 (Sputnik) — Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras expressed hope that the new government will keep the country in the Eurozone.
Samaras made a brief statement late on Sunday at the elections press center in Athens' Zappeion palace.
The prime minister said that his New Democracy party is leaving the country, which began to emerge from the crisis, without a budget deficit.
"It must be preserved," he said.
According to the preliminary results, Greek left-wing party Syriza is running ahead of the incumbent New Democracy party led by Samaras at the national snap election by eight percent.
"We remain ready to play a decisive role in the development of the country, to maintain the country's European course, stability, security and reforms that should be undertaken. The New Democracy will play a crucial role in the new parliament and we guarantee that it will fulfill its mission," the prime minister said.
The representative of Syriza party told RIA Novosti that Samaras has congratulated in a phone call Syriza’s leader Alexis Tsipras with victory at the elections.
Snap parliamentary elections in Greece took place on Sunday, following the current parliament’s dissolution over its failure to elect a new president after three attempts. Siryza has promised to revise Greece’s austerity measures aimed at meeting the bailout conditions set by international creditors in exchange for multibillion loans issued over Greece’s sovereign debt crisis.
